While ready-to-order weed tea options are great, there’s something to be said about making your own. Weed tea is simple to make, and you have a ton of choices in terms of flavour and potency to brew the perfect cup for you. So let’s dive in and find out how.
Decarbing your weed
One of the first things you need to know before brewing your own weed tea is that if you want to get high, you will need to decarb your weed first. Decarbing, or decarboxylation, is the process by which the THC in your cannabis activates. Before the decarboxylation process, marijuana mostly contains THCA, which is not psychoactive. This is because all cannabinoids contained within the trichomes of raw cannabis flowers have an extra carboxyl ring group (COOH) attached to their chain. When we smoke marijuana, the decarboxylation occurs instantly as the weed is ignited. For edibles and drinkables, the decarboxylation must take place before we incorporate the cannabis into our recipes. Without decarboxylation, our tea will not be as potent as we would like. While this might seem like a whole lot of complicated science, the actual process for decarbing weed is quite simple.
How to decarb weed
- Preheat your oven to 220F/105 C
- Place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet
- Grind your weed and put it on the parchment paper
- Pop the baking sheet in the oven and leave it for 25 minutes if dry, or 45 minutes if more fresh
Voilà. You now have decarbed weed. Now onto making tea.
Making your weed tea
The beautiful thing about weed tea is how versatile it is. Whether you like green tea, black tea, or even iced tea, there are endless combinations of strains and tea varieties which go great together. Once you have your decarbed weed it’s a simple matter of combining the proper dosage to your favourite tea. We recommend starting with approximately 2 teaspoons of decarbed weed per serving, and adjusting based on your experience afterwards.
